Muralee Thummarukudy currently works for the United Nations Environment Programme and is based in Geneva.
Muralee had his early education in Kerala. He is a Graduate in Civil Engineering from University of Kerala and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He has since attended some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world, including the University of California (Berkeley) and United Nations Leadership Academy (Amman).
In his professional life, Muralee had the opportunity to be involved in the assessment and follow-up of the major disasters and conflicts of 21st Century.
He had worked in the follow-up of the South East Asian Tsunami, Wenchuan Earth Quake in China, Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, and numerous other small disasters. He also designed and implemented the follow-up environmental assessments in Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestine after the conflicts in these places.
From 1st September 2009, Muralee is responsible for the Disaster Risk Reduction Portfolio of UNEP. Muralee is also a member of the Science and Technology Panel of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
Muralee was born in a big family in Kerala (India) as the seventh of eight children. His childhood, which he spent close to nature, was influenced by his maternal uncle (who was a communist and spent his money and energy building libraries) and paternal uncle (who was an astrologer and spent his money and energy in building temples). Though he is a liberal democrat now, he believes in the ultimate goodness of all human beings.
